About Cathy Hirsh

Cathy Hirsh In collections across the US and internationally, Cathy Hirsh's award-winning work has been described as energetic, heartfelt, muscular, joyful, colorful, eclectic, optimistic, meaty yet approachable.

A Resident Artist with Washington ArtWorks in Rockville, Maryland, Hirsh's work can be found on multiple websites, in Washington-area gallery and display venues, and at periodic solo and group shows. Her work spans landscape, floral, and abstract subject matter in multiple media.

A painting enthusiast all her life, she has been a full-time painter since 2003. Then, Hirsh, a vice-president leading a successful consulting practice for a major firm, after 27 years was unexpectedly without a role due to a company reorganization. Instead of immediately seeking another position, she decided to take a break and pursue her interests in painting, gardening, and travel while she considered next steps. She has never looked back.

Her travels have taken her to all seven continents, often painting on location. She is a Master Gardener and a speaker to garden groups on art concepts and garden design.

Hirsh is also an active participant in local art groups. She manages the Montgomery Art Association (MAA) Gallery in Westfield Wheaton and the MAA website and was president of MAA 2010-2013. She is also treasurer of the Washington Metropolitan Artists Society.

A native Californian, Hirsh also lived in the mid-west and rural New York before settling in Maryland outside Washington, DC.

About her work, Hirsh says, "Sometimes painting can seem magical as the picture seems to paint itself, capturing what I've imagined directly and simply. Other times, it can be a real struggle, whether it is because of the subject, a new technique, or simply being outside fighting the weather and insects! Regardless, I find painting a joy, and I hope that is clear in my work."
